Galerie illégitime 9

A still life that brings together Robert Filliou’s Galerie Légitime, the visual language of hashtags, and Marcel Broodthaers’ “FIG” in an image with multiple layers of meaning. The work connects painting with systems of circulation and display, translating key aspects of institutional critique into a contemporary pictorial language.

Executed in oil on linen, the piece combines conceptual clarity with a strong pictorial presence. Integrated into The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona, it forms part of a practice that reconsiders the museum as an artistic form.

Davis Lisboa, Galerie illégitime 9, 2017. Oil on linen, 40 × 40 × 3.5 cm (15.7 × 15.7 × 1.38 in).

The painting brings together three interrelated references within a single image: Robert Filliou’s Galerie Légitime, the visual logic of hashtags, and Marcel Broodthaers’ use of the term “FIG.” Filliou’s portable gallery, conceived as an exhibition space contained within a hat, displaced the art gallery onto the artist’s own body.

The inscription “#FIG.1” introduces a layered reading. The hashtag, drawn from the digital sphere, suggests circulation, indexing, and visibility, while “FIG.” refers to the numbering systems used in illustrated publications, employed by Broodthaers to translate editorial codes into the field of visual art. Together, these elements connect the painting to systems of classification and dissemination, while preserving its material presence.

The work situates itself within a lineage of artists who redefined the museum as a critical construct. Duchamp’s Boîte-en-Valise, Filliou’s Galerie Légitime, and Broodthaers’ Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles proposed new ways of questioning the modes of display, legitimization, and circulation of art. Within this continuity, the Davis Museum Barcelona operates as an expanded entity—readymade sculpture, digital archive, and artistic project recognized by the Government of Catalonia.

Executed in oil on linen, the square format echoes the cubic geometry of the Davis Museum, while the monochrome blue palette reinforces its visual identity. As part of The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona, the work stands at the intersection of image, exhibition system, and institutional reflection.
