Robert Filliou X

Rooted in Robert Filliou’s Galerie légitime and informed by the perceptual instability of Gerhard Richter’s photo-paintings, Robert Filliou X situates the image between presence and dissolution. Part of The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona, the work operates at the intersection of painting and institutional form, where surface, structure, and display converge within a restrained blue-and-white field.

Davis Lisboa, Robert Filliou X, 2011. Oil on linen, 50 × 50 × 3.5 cm (19.7 × 19.7 × 1.38 in)

The work is structured around the central image of Autoportrait bien fait, mal fait, pas fait (1973) by Robert Filliou, an assemblage in which the artist appears wearing the Galerie légitime: a portable gallery constructed from a folded paper hat. Beyond its anecdotal dimension, this gesture proposes a reconfiguration of exhibition space, shifting it toward an intimate, mobile, and non-institutional scale.

The painting adopts a logic akin to the photo-paintings of Gerhard Richter, where the image occupies an unstable threshold between emergence and disappearance. The veiled surface dissolves photographic clarity and suspends the possibility of a fixed reading, holding the image in a state of latency. In this shift, representation no longer operates as evidence, but asserts itself as process.

Integrated into The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona, the work is part of a dispositif in which each painting functions both as an autonomous unit and as a fragment within an expanded institutional structure. This position extends a lineage in which the museum is redefined as both form and practice.

The restrained palette of blues and whites establishes a direct relationship with the visual identity of Davis Museum Barcelona. The square format, in turn, echoes its architectural logic, creating a precise correspondence between pictorial surface, spatial construction, and institutional image.
