Robert Filliou 27

A portrait grounded in the legacy of Robert Filliou, this painting draws on his Galerie légitime—a portable gallery worn as a paper hat—to explore the body as a site of exhibition. Four colored commas at the base reference Marcel Broodthaers’ Cinéma Modèle, introducing a minimal visual structure, while the partial inscription “$2000 Reward” evokes Marcel Duchamp’s wanted image, opening questions around authorship and circulation.

Part of The Paintings Section From Davis Museum Barcelona, the work combines a gestural, open painterly approach with a precise conceptual framework.

Davis Lisboa, Robert Filliou 27, 2023. Oil on linen, 80 × 80 × 3.5 cm (31.5 × 31.5 × 1.38 in).

This painting takes as its point of departure the figure of Robert Filliou and his Autoportrait bien fait, mal fait, pas fait (1987), in which the artist presents his Galerie légitime: a paper hat conceived as a portable gallery. This displacement of the institution onto the body establishes the conceptual axis of the work.

At the base of the bust, four colored commas refer to Cinéma Modèle by Marcel Broodthaers, where punctuation marks are isolated as autonomous visual forms. Here, these commas introduce a minimal structure that organizes the pictorial space.

To the right of the hat, partially visible, the inscription “$2000 Reward” alludes to the well-known image of Marcel Duchamp as a wanted figure, introducing a dimension of circulation, identity, and ambiguity around the role of the artist.

The work is part of The Paintings Section From Davis Museum Barcelona. The square format reinforces the structural coherence of the project, while the painting’s open, gestural execution sustains a precise tension between painterly matter and conceptual construction.
