Robert Filliou 35

Part of The Paintings Section of the Davis Museum Barcelona, this work engages with the legacy of Robert Filliou through a reconfiguration of his Galerie Légitime (1962). Drawing on a historical photograph, the composition reactivates a critical lineage that extends from Marcel Duchamp to Marcel Broodthaers, situating the image within a broader reflection on the artwork as institution.

Rendered in oil on linen, the painting adopts a pictorial language informed by Pablo Picasso, where figuration and fragmentation coexist in a controlled tension. Overlapping planes structure the image, preserving its referential clarity while subtly destabilizing its form.

Davis Lisboa, Robert Filliou 35, 2018. Oil on linen, 60 × 60 × 3.5 cm (23.6 × 23.6 × 0.6 in).

This work is part of The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona, a body of works that structures the project founded by Davis Lisboa in 2009. Conceived from a ballot box transformed into a ready-made sculpture, the museum operates as a digital archive, a collection of small-format contemporary artworks, and a collective platform without commercial orientation, recognized as a cultural entity by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The painting takes as its point of departure a black-and-white photograph of Robert Filliou, in which he appears wearing his Galerie Légitime (1962) as a hat—an element central to his assemblage Autoportrait Bien Fait, Mal Fait, Pas Fait. Presented at the Misfits Festival in London, this portable gallery articulates a critical stance toward the art institution, establishing a lineage that resonates with works such as the Boîte-en-valise by Marcel Duchamp and the Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles by Marcel Broodthaers.

Formally, the composition is structured through a logic close to the Cubist language of Pablo Picasso, where figuration and fragmentation remain in active tension. The image unfolds through overlapping planes and internal displacements that fracture representation while maintaining its referential grounding.
