Robert Filliou 11 reconsiders portraiture through a language of association rather than likeness. Based on the image of an anonymous man wearing a folded paper hat, the painting subtly evokes Galerie Légitime (c. 1962–1963), the gesture through which Robert Filliou transformed his own hat into a portable exhibition space.
The work aligns with a tradition in which the museum is approached as a flexible structure—at once format, gesture, and critical position. In this context, it resonates with Marcel Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise and Marcel Broodthaers’ Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles, extending a lineage where artistic practice and institutional form are closely intertwined.
