Robert Filliou 34

This work forms part of The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona and engages with the figure of Robert Filliou through a critical reinterpretation of his Galerie Légitime (1962). Drawing on a historical photographic source, the painting transforms this portrait of the artist with his portable exhibition device into a central pictorial structure, articulating a reflection on alternative modes of artistic circulation.

Through a contemporary reconfiguration of the Cubist language associated with Pablo Picasso, the composition interweaves figuration and abstraction across a dynamic, layered surface. Executed in oil on linen, the work combines material precision with conceptual density, situating itself within a genealogy that includes Boîte-en-valise by Marcel Duchamp and Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles by Marcel Broodthaers.

Davis Lisboa, Robert Filliou 34, 2024, oil on linen, 80 × 80 × 3.5 cm (31.5 × 31.5 ×  1.38 in).

This painting is part of The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona, the central body of work within the project initiated by Davis Lisboa in 2009. Conceived from a ballot box transformed into a ready-made sculpture, the museum operates as a hybrid platform: a digital archive, a curated collection of small-format contemporary paintings, and a collective project without commercial orientation, recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The work draws on a historical black-and-white photograph of Robert Filliou, a key figure in Fluxus, depicted wearing his Galerie Légitime (1962) as a hat during the Festival of Misfits (London, 1962). Conceived as a portable exhibition device, this work proposes an alternative mode of artistic circulation. Within the painting, it functions as both a visual and conceptual anchor, activating a lineage of practices that includes Boîte-en-valise by Marcel Duchamp and Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles by Marcel Broodthaers.

Formally, the composition develops through a contemporary reinterpretation of the Cubist language associated with Pablo Picasso. Figuration and abstraction are interwoven through layered planes, generating a dynamic structure in which the image is fragmented without losing its legibility.

Executed in oil on linen, the work emphasizes material quality and durability. The medium allows for subtle tonal variation, structural precision, and surface richness, reinforcing its place within the European pictorial tradition and its standing as a collectible contemporary painting.
