Inspired by a black-and-white photograph by Bernd Jansen, this painting reimagines Marcel Broodthaers seated at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf during his 1972 exhibition, «Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles, Section Cinéma.» Unlike the original photograph, in my version Broodthaers is depicted wearing Robert Filliou’s “Galerie Légitime”—a hat transformed into a portable art gallery, symbolizing an invisible exhibition space.
The work invites reflection on artists who redefined the museum as a form of art itself: Duchamp with his «Boîte-en-valise,» Filliou with his «Galerie Légitime,» and Broodthaers with his fictional museum. In this same conceptual lineage stands the Davis Museum Barcelona, symbolically founded in a ballot box and promoted primarily through social media. It exists simultaneously as a conceptual sculpture, a digital archive, and a nonprofit collective art project officially recognized by the Government of Catalonia. Its Painting Section—the only body of work available for sale—features pieces grouped by genre that pay tribute to these conceptual legacies.
