«Robert Filliou 18» (2018) by Davis Lisboa draws its inspiration from an anonymous and undated photograph of Robert Filliou, captured wearing glasses and smoking a cigarette. This enigmatic image evokes Filliou’s radical and playful spirit, especially as embodied in his project «La Galerie Légitime» (1962–1963), a portable art gallery that challenged traditional structures of art circulation and legitimacy. The painting engages in a broader critical narrative within art history, tracing a lineage that extends from Marcel Duchamp’s «Boîte-en-valise» (1936–1941) through Filliou’s own interventions, to Marcel Broodthaers’ «Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles» (1968–1972), figures who blurred the boundaries of authorship and exhibition.

This work invites viewers to reflect on the evolving concept of artistic self-institutionalization, an impulse that resonates in my creation of the Davis Museum Barcelona (2009–ongoing). Conceived as a ready-made sculpture within an electoral ballot box and recognized as a cultural entity by the Generalitat de Catalunya, this mini-museum of contemporary art operates as a nonprofit collective, a digital archive, and a critical platform disseminated primarily via social media. Despite its reduced scale, the museum offers a pointed critique of the hegemonic structures of contemporary art display and consumption, questioning established notions of authorship, market dynamics, and collecting practices.

The square format of this painting echoes the cubic geometry of the Davis Museum, while its blue and white palette aligns with the museum’s visual identity. Executed in oil on linen using the highest-quality materials—Old Holland oil paints and Blockx mediums—this work belongs to the sole section of the Davis Museum offering works for sale: «The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona». It invites collectors to engage with a critical exploration of art’s histories and institutional frameworks.
