This is one of the paintings from the ‘Paintings Section of Davis Museum Barcelona,’ a mini contemporary art museum I created in 2009 (). My starting point for this painting was a black-and-white photograph of Robert Filliou, a French artist associated with the Fluxus Movement, wearing his artwork ‘Galerie légitime’ (1962) on his head. This mobile art gallery, created from a folded paper hat, was exhibited at the ‘Defrosting the Frozen Exhibition’ in London in 1962. When creating the oil painting, I chose to combine forms inspired by the «trencadís,» or ceramic mosaics, of architect Antoni Gaudí with the tropical and festive colors of Latin American art. I drew inspiration from the figurative works of Brazilian artist Cândido Portinari and the abstract flags of Alfredo Volpi.
