Davis Lisboa, Marcel Broodthaers 29, 2026. Oil on linen, 80 cm × 80 cm × 3.5 cm (31.5 x 31.5 x 1.38 in).
The painting brings into alignment two distinct historical moments through a constructed portrait of Marcel Broodthaers. The figure appears wearing, as a folded paper hat, Galerie légitime by Robert Filliou, while holding one of Barres de bois rond by André Cadere. These elements—portable, provisional, and inherently unstable—introduce a logic of displacement that unfolds within the pictorial field.
Behind the figure, a sequence of stanchions recalls Propriété Privée, presented within the Section Publicité of Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles, during Documenta 5. Their presence establishes a threshold, both physical and symbolic, situating the figure between access and restriction, display and withdrawal.
A second, fragmented iteration of the Galerie légitime emerges in the lower register, doubling the structure while dispersing its coherence. The composition draws from the frontal gravity of Adrián Pulido Pareja, adopting a restrained Baroque stillness that stabilizes the accumulation of references.
Within the framework of The Paintings Section of Davis Museum Barcelona, the work operates simultaneously as a portrait and an archive. It extends the lineage of artist-founded institutions while maintaining a precise continuity between pictorial practice and institutional form.
