Robert Filliou 7

Drawing on a mode of theatrical figuration, the painting reimagines Robert Filliou as a dandy whose hat signals the “Galerie Légitime”, transforming the mind into an imagined exhibition space.

The work forms part of “The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona”, which narrates a historical lineage of artists who have created their own exhibition spaces.

Drawing on the timeless, theatrical figuration associated with Neo Rauch’s painting, this imaginary portrait casts Robert Filliou as a dandy-artist whose hat becomes the seat of the “Galerie Légitime” (1962–64), an art gallery carried on the body. This oil on linen begins from a projected photograph and is articulated through a Richter-like blur. Blue glazes, scumbled transitions, and restrained edges bind figure and ground, allowing the surface to oscillate between document and apparition.

The work belongs to “The Paintings Section from Davis Museum Barcelona,” the pictorial division of Davis Museum Barcelona, a miniature museum founded in 2009 and realized as a ready-made sculpture in the form of a ballot box. The painting’s square format and restricted blue register recall the miniature museum’s cubic aesthetic as a chromatic signature, inviting viewers to locate the gallery where it is least expected.
